More Civility, Anyone? Join Our Book Study on “Restoring Civility”

Dear Friends,

As I mentioned last week, the need for civility and respect has never been more obvious. The uptick of divisive rhetoric, political clashes, and personal conflicts can easily lead us astray from the core teachings of our faith. We are called, afterall, to imitate Jesus in daily life. As we navigate these challenges, it becomes increasingly important to pay attention to how we can embody the principles of civility and respect in our lives and our congregation. This is part of our witness to the world around us.

Starting on July 30th at 7:00 pm, we are embarking on a transformative journey with our five-week book study on “Restoring Civility: Lessons from the Master” by Kent Hunter and Tracee Swank. This study is more than just an opportunity to read a book together; it’s a chance to equip ourselves as a congregation for our larger ministry to the West County area, striving to be a mission-minded church that reaches out to those far from Christ.

Why This Book is Vital To Our Future:

As long-time church attendees and faithful members of our congregation, you understand the importance of our church’s role in the community. However, our mission extends beyond just meeting our needs; it involves extending Christ’s love and respect to those who are far from Him. “Restoring Civility” offers seven practical lessons that can help us foster a culture of respect and civility within our church and beyond, aligning with our mission to serve others.

The political rhetoric of this current election cycle, combined with the painful memories of our church’s formation, reminds us of the importance of maintaining civility and respect in all interactions. We were born out of a conflict over deeply held beliefs about sexuality and marriage, which left many of us with lasting pain. This study offers a path toward healing and renewal, grounded in Christian principles and the teachings of Jesus.

Lessons We Will Explore

  1. The Principle of Respect:
    • Respect is foundational for civility. It involves recognizing the inherent worth and dignity of every individual, regardless of differences. This principle encourages treating others as we wish to be treated, reflecting the Golden Rule.
  2. The Power of Listening:
    • Active listening is crucial for understanding and empathy. By truly hearing others, we validate their experiences and foster a culture of respect.
  3. The Role of Self-Control:
    • Civility requires self-control, especially in heated or challenging situations. This involves managing our emotions and reactions to maintain respectful interactions.
  4. The Impact of Words:
    • Words have power and can build up or tear down. This lesson focuses on using language that promotes kindness and understanding, avoiding hurtful or divisive speech.
  5. The Value of Service:
    • Serving others is a practical expression of civility. This lesson highlights the importance of selflessness and the positive impact of serving the needs of those around us.
  6. The Necessity of Humility:
    • Humility is essential for civility. Recognizing our own limitations and being open to learning from others creates a culture of mutual respect.
  7. The Practice of Forgiveness:
    • Forgiveness is key to restoring relationships and maintaining civility. This lesson teaches the importance of letting go of grudges and extending grace to others.

Why Your Participation Matters

Many of you have experienced past church conflicts that led to the start of West County Lutheran Church. These conflicts often stemmed from a lack of civility and respect, resulting in painful divisions. Our goal is to shift this focus, preparing ourselves to be a beacon of Jesus-inspired civility in a world desperate for positive examples. This study is about personal and spiritual growth while equipping our church to fulfill its mission effectively.

Warm and Conversational Environment

We will create a warm and inviting atmosphere for our study sessions, encouraging open dialogue, mutual support, and practical training. This will be an opportunity to connect with fellow members, share experiences, and grow together in our understanding and practice of Christian civility.

Call to Action

We encourage each of you to join us in this essential journey. By participating in this book study, you will be taking an active role in shaping the future of our church and its mission. Let’s come together to rediscover respect and civility, making our congregation a true reflection of Christ’s love and grace.

Engage and Reflect

We also invite you to share your thoughts and experiences in the comments section of our blog. Your insights and reflections will enrich our group understanding and help foster a more connected and supportive community.
