Christianity and the World’s Religions

Why “Christianity and the World’s Religions” is the Bible Study You Can’t Miss

Ever been in one of those conversations about faith that leaves you stumped? Maybe it was a friend casually saying, “All religions are basically the same,” or someone insisting that “good people go to heaven no matter what.” Or maybe it was someone genuinely curious about what makes Christianity different. Did you have the words to respond? Did you feel like you shared the truth in love, or did you walk away wishing you’d said more (or said it better)?

If so, you’re in good company. A lot of us at West County Lutheran Church feel the same way. That’s why I’m so excited about our upcoming Bible study: “Christianity and the World’s Religions.” This six-week series is designed to help us better understand what we believe and why—and how to share it with others, whether they’re unchurched neighbors or well-meaning Christians who’ve picked up some fuzzy theology along the way.

Let’s dive into what this study is all about.

Why This Course? Why Now?

Our world is more connected than ever, but it’s also full of spiritual confusion. Many people believe that all paths lead to the same destination, or that being “nice” or “spiritual” is what counts. Even within the church, some of us wrestle with articulating why Jesus is the only way—or how to explain it without sounding harsh or judgmental.

Here at West County Lutheran, we’re called to be ready with an answer when people ask us about our hope in Christ (1 Peter 3:15). But let’s be honest: defending our faith isn’t about winning arguments. It’s about loving people enough to share the truth with humility and grace. This study will help us do just that.

And folks, let’s talk about that 9:00 AM start time. I know it’s tempting to roll in at 9:07 or 9:10, but we’ve only got 45 minutes. Let’s make every one of them count by being ready to start on time, coffee in hand and hearts prepared.

What We’ll Cover

Session 1: Jesus’ Exclusive Claim (John 14:6) and Why It Matters

Is it narrow-minded to say Jesus is the only way to God? Not if it’s true. In this first session, we’ll dig into what Jesus meant when He said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). We’ll also talk about why this claim isn’t about exclusion—it’s an invitation to everyone. You’ll leave with a clearer understanding of why Jesus’ words matter and how to share them in a way that connects with people.

Session 2: Christianity vs. Islam: Jesus and Muhammad

What sets Jesus apart from Muhammad? In this session, we’ll compare their lives, teachings, and roles. We’ll explore how Jesus’ identity as God in the flesh changes everything, and how salvation by grace (Ephesians 2:8-9) differs from Islam’s works-based approach. You’ll learn how to share your faith with Muslim friends while showing respect and care.

Session 3: Christianity vs. Hinduism: The Nature of God and Humanity

Hinduism teaches that everything is divine, but Christianity reveals a God who is personal and holy. We’ll explore the differences between Hinduism’s pantheistic worldview and the Christian understanding of a Creator who loves His creation. We’ll also unpack how grace triumphs over karma. This session will help you engage thoughtfully with friends who hold Eastern beliefs.

Session 4: Christianity vs. Buddhism: Sin and Salvation

Buddhism focuses on escaping suffering, but Christianity offers a Savior who entered into our suffering to redeem us. In this session, we’ll contrast the Buddhist Eightfold Path with the Christian message that salvation is a gift, not something we earn (Romans 6:23). You’ll leave with a deeper appreciation for the rest Jesus offers (Matthew 11:28-30).

Session 5: Christianity vs. Judaism: Fulfilled Prophecy in Jesus

Jesus fulfilled the promises of the Old Testament, but many Jewish people don’t see Him as the Messiah. We’ll look at key prophecies about the Messiah—from His birthplace (Micah 5:2) to His suffering and resurrection (Isaiah 53)—and see how they point to Jesus. This session will help you share the Gospel with Jewish friends in a way that honors their heritage.

Session 6: Evangelism in a Multifaith World

How can we talk about Jesus in a way that’s both truthful and gracious? Our final session takes a cue from Paul’s example in Acts 17, where he speaks to a diverse audience with wisdom and love. We’ll cover practical tips for sharing your faith, answering tough questions, and pointing people to Jesus.

What You’ll Gain

This study isn’t about head knowledge—it’s about heart transformation. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Confidence: You’ll feel more prepared to explain what makes Christianity unique.
  • Clarity: You’ll understand how Christianity compares to other religions and how to respond to common objections.
  • Compassion: You’ll grow in your ability to share the truth with grace and love.

By the end of these six weeks, you’ll be better equipped to talk about your faith—whether it’s with a skeptical coworker, a curious neighbor, or a fellow Christian who’s wrestling with doubts.

How to Join

We meet Sunday mornings at 9:00 AM in the fellowship hall. Please try to arrive on time (or even a few minutes early) so we can make the most of our time together. Bring your Bible (we’ll be using the ESV), and feel free to invite a friend. This is a great opportunity to deepen your faith and invite someone else to explore Christianity.

A Final Word

The world has a lot of questions about faith, and we have the privilege of pointing people to Jesus. But to do that well, we need to be prepared. “Christianity and the World’s Religions” is a chance to grow in your faith, understand the world around you, and make a difference in the lives of others.

Will you join us? Let’s dig into this together and see what God does.
