As Jesus looked up, He saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. “Truly I tell you,” He said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”

Devotional: Reflections on True Generosity
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
As we gather in spirit and truth, let us turn our hearts to a poignant moment captured in the Gospel of Luke—a moment that invites us to reconsider our understanding of giving and generosity. Here, in the quiet corners of the temple, Jesus observes the crowd as they bring their offerings. Among them, a poor widow approaches, her gift small yet immeasurable in the eyes of our Savior.
This widow, whose offering was but two small copper coins, might easily have gone unnoticed among the grander donations of the wealthy. Yet, Jesus draws our attention not to the amount she gave, but to the heart with which she gave it. Her offering was everything she had to live on, which she gave to God with a spirit of complete trust and devotion.
This passage challenges us to reflect deeply on the nature of true generosity. It isn’t measured by the size of the gift but by the spirit of the giver. The widow’s act of giving all she had is a profound expression of her faith—a faith that relies wholly on God’s provision and grace.
Some Reflections:
Let us ponder our own approach to giving. Do we give from our abundance, or do we, like the widow, give in a way that truly reflects our trust in God? This question invites us to examine not just our financial contributions but also our commitment to giving our time, talents, and total selves to the service of God and others.
The widow’s story compels us to ask ourselves: What does it mean to give “all we have”? It means prioritizing God above all, trusting Him beyond our immediate circumstances, and dedicating ourselves fully to His purposes. It’s a call to radical trust and radical generosity, rooted in a deep-seated belief that God will provide for our needs as we align our lives with His will.
Application to Daily Life:
This week, let each of us consider one way we might give more fully. Perhaps it’s by dedicating time to prayer, offering our skills to the church community, or engaging more intentionally in acts of kindness and compassion. Whatever form it takes, let our giving reflect a heart wholly devoted to God.
Closing Prayer:
Lord Jesus, You who noticed the smallest gifts and the greatest hearts, teach us to give as the widow did—freely, sacrificially, and with full trust in You. Help us to understand that true generosity is measured not by the quantity of our gifts but by the quality of our hearts. May our lives reflect a trust in You that transcends our possessions and our fears, and may we live each day as a testament to Your endless grace and provision. In Your holy name, we pray, Amen.
May this reflection deepen your faith and inspire a generosity that mirrors the widow’s—complete, trusting, and reflective of a heart fully committed to God’s glory. Let us all strive to live with such faith, each day. God bless you.
